KIPPRA rolls out Mentorship Program at Garissa University

The Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research and Analysis (KIPPRA) in collaboration with Garissa University has rolled-out a mentorship program, dubbed KIPPRA Mentorship Program for Universities (MPUs), at Garissa University on 13th February 2019.

Garissa University Vice-Chancellor, Prof Ahmed Osman Warfa, said Universities must be involved in the policy making process adding that partnership is required in pushing government development agenda.

Prof Warfa, call on the government to give funds to universities to undertake research on agriculture, livestock and environment.

“We’re facing the biggest environmental challenge the region has ever seen. Something must be done in order to mitigate climate impacts” said the Vice-Chancellor. He challenged lecturers and students to conduct research on deforestation, soil erosion, and pollution of water resources. He added that the impact of refugees on the environment cannot be ignored.

The VC talked about the extreme weather conditions currently experienced in the region saying it will have a devastating impact if something is not done on climate change. He calls on the government to initiate programs to directly respond to floods, drought and other related issues.

Finally, the VC underscored the need to integrate research and development saying that there’s need to allocate sufficient fund to carry out research on climate change in order to enhance the economic potential of the country.

The well-attended event was characterized by presentations from KIPPRA, Questions and Answers from participants on public policy making process, and the roles university students play in the execution of public policy.

Selected student panelists from the Garissa University were also given an opportunity to debate innovative ways and present ideas and opinions cutting across the Big Four Agenda.

The program is for university community in building synergies between policy makers and the academia. This includes University students and lecturers.

The overall goal and mandate of KIPPRA is to improve public policy making for realization of national development goals, through economic forecasting, policy analysis and research, and formulation of medium and long-term strategic perspectives for economic and social development.
