- Philosophy the Programme

The programme, BA in Arabic with Islamic Studies, endeavours to creatively promote and improve participative democracy, sustainable development, rights, economic opportunity, equality and social justice, through the organization education and empowerment of people within their communities.
- Rationale of the Programme
This programme trains leaners to be competent linguists and religious experts ready to enter graduate employment. The Arabic with Islamic Studies degree offers an exciting combination of the study of Arabic language and culture alongside the wider study of the forms, structures and varieties of the language itself in combination with Islam which encompasses the language.
Learners will develop a high level of competence in oral and written communication in Arabic, proficiency in language transfer skills, and a thorough knowledge of Arabic culture with regard to Islamic religion. Upon graduation, learners will be able to thrive linguistically in diverse cultural situations while at the same time appreciate Islam and its tenets.
Learners will study an integrated curriculum with a focus on applied language skills, cultural studies and religious knowledge and practice, supported by a rigorous development of their foreign language skills in all areas. Learners are exposed to an integrated interdisciplinary way, exploring the connections between language, culture and religion in line with the broader historical and cross-cultural contexts in which they are produced.
The programme places particular emphasis on employability and the contemporary cultural and religious context, and offer high-quality teaching in all language skills.
The linguistics and religious components of the combined degree will develop the learners understanding and knowledge of language and religion to an advanced and sophisticated level, while fostering and enhancing their skills in using Arabic and appreciating Islamic faith.
The learner will have an opportunity to spend time in an affiliated partner institution, or undertake an approved form of attachment in an institution where Arabic is the language of operation. This means the learner will undertake placement which gives them a valuable opportunity to boost their employability while improving their language competence and appreciate Islamic faith.
This course will prepare learners for roles in a range of fields, including:

- Digital copywriting
- Language teaching
- Speech therapy
- Teaching and education
- Translation and interpreting
- Islamic Faith Based Organisations
The programme is a four-year course focusing on the study of Arabic language and literature, in combination with Islamic Studies. The objective of the BA course in Arabic with Islamic Studies is to give students a thorough grounding in written and spoken Modern Standard Arabic, and to equip them with a knowledge of the history and culture of Arabs and Islam through critical engagement with secondary literature and by reading original writings dating from pre-Islamic times to the present century.
There are core courses in literature, history and religion, and options which give the opportunity to specialise further in these subjects as well as in Islamic art and theology and medieval or modern thought. Students also write a dissertation on a topic of their choice.
- Goal of the Programme
The goal of this program is to equip students with knowledge and skills for a holistic approach to community, social and religious development for social transformation.
- Expected Learning Outcomes of the Programme
By the end of the programme, the learner will be able to:
- Describe concepts in Arabic language and Islamic Education.
- Demonstrate competencies in Arabic language and Islamic Studies.
- Integrate basic principles in the study of Arabic language as well as Islamic Education.
- Deal with contemporary and emerging issues and challenges in study of Arabic language and Islamic religion.
- Pursue advanced studies and careers in areas that related to or that require use of Arabic and the practice of Islamic faith.
- Develop partnership with development agencies and engage in Arabic language policy, and Islamic Education.
- Mode of Delivery
The programme shall be delivered both on full-time and part time basis. While full time classes will run on weekdays, part-time classes will involve evening classes and online learning. The programme shall be delivered through:

- Admission Requirements
University undergraduate academic regulations shall apply. To qualify for admission to the BA in Community Development degree programme of Garissa University a candidate must:
- Satisfy the minimum entry requirements set for admission into Kenyan public universities, which is a C+
- Have passed the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) with at least a C+ in English/Kiswahili/Arabic and one Humanity or Islamic Religious Education.
