About This Course

Doctor of Philosophy in Education (Curriculum Studies) is a programme designed to develop professionals with advanced research knowledge and skills in the field of educational curriculum and instruction. The programme will prepare experts who have intellectual disposition, ethical sensibilities and leadership potential for transformative education and cutting-edge instruction.

  1. Expected Learning Outcomes 

By the end of the programme, the graduates will be able to: 

  1. Design and conduct independent empirical research focusing on aspects of curriculum design, pedagogy, evaluation, leadership and policy that positively impacts learning outcomes and educational change. 
  2. Demonstrate an understanding of contemporary issues and contextual underpinnings in curriculum design and pedagogical frameworks, principles and theories.
  3. Evaluate curricula projects, educational programs and the functioning of quality assurance frameworks.
  4. Demonstrate curriculum leadership competencies, dispositions, values and policy analysis.
  5. Design and conduct research-based curricula and seminars.
  6. Critically analyze existing policies, philosophical and theoretical nature of curriculum and pedagogical frameworks for interpretative alignments in education.
  7. Critically analyze curriculum innovative practices in the context of sustainable development goals.
  8. Develop effective strategic plans for curricula in education.
  9. Demonstrate ICT skills and knowledge in learning and teaching contexts.
  10. Analyze frameworks and values of education in terms of demand, supply and equity of educational resources for socio-economic and political development.
  11. Evaluate educational governance frameworks, policies, laws and litigations with regard to student and parent rights, Labour laws, child protection, and collective bargaining in educational institutions.

Admission Requirements for the Proposed Programme

To be admitted into the programme, an applicant must satisfy the minimum university entry requirements for postgraduate programmes. In addition, the applicant must meet the following admission requirements for the Doctor of Philosophy in Curriculum Studies or an equivalent qualification recognized by the Senate of Garissa University:

  1. A holder of a Master of Education degree of Garissa University or equivalent from a
    recognized University.
  2.  Must have taken at least four (4) courses in Curriculum Studies at Masters level 
  3. Must show ability to undertake academic research by having written a thesis/dissertation at Masters level.
  4. Acceptance by the department of a concept paper of not more than 1000 words stating the applicant’s purpose and goals of study. 
  5. Proof of English proficiency is required for students from non-English speaking countries.
