Garissa University Concludes Successful 2nd GIS Week with Mercy Corps.

Garissa University today concluded the 2nd GIS Week, with a theme ‘’Mapping Minds, Shaping the Future’’ a dynamic event that brought together delegates,County governments , industry partners, and distinguished speakers to celebrate achievements and explore future opportunities in Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

The final day of the GIS Week featured an impactful lineup of activities:

Informative Presentations: Attendees were treated to a range of insightful presentations, including:

• The ASAL Adapts Program’s showcase of its Geospatial interventions and achievements

• Industry insights from partners like Esri Eastern Africa, Locate IT, and OSM Kenya/Youth Mappers, exploring the potential of Geospatial tools for learning, research, and rangeland management

– Curriculum Development: The university proudly introduced 7 new Geospatial curricula designed to enhance Geospatial science education in Northern Kenya, aligning with local needs and sustainable development goals.

Keynote Speakers: The event was honored by the presence of distinguished keynote speakers, including William Baron, Country Director of Mercy Corps, Prof. Ahmed Osman Warfa, Vice Chancellor of Garissa University, and H.E. Hon. Abdi Dagane, Deputy Governor of Garissa County.

The GIS Week concluded with an official presentation and handover ceremony of the new Geospatial science programs, marking a significant milestone in Garissa University’s commitment to fostering innovation and sustainable development through GIS education.
