Today is the culmination of the inaugural GIS Week celebration in Northern Kenya taking place at Garissa University.

This event positions Garissa University as a key player

in the geospatial domain and drives the adoption of Geospatial Technology among FCDC counties.

The GIS Week celebration revolved around three central themes: Governance,

Rangeland Management, and Peace and Conflict. As part of the celebration, a series of training

courses and a conference were organized to facilitate the convergence of diverse stakeholders for the exchange of knowledge and experiences.

Garissa University Geospatial Innovation Center was officially commissioned by the Deputy Governor of Garissa County, His Excellency Abdi Dagane; the Chair of Garissa University Council, Dr Margaret Gikuhi; the Vice Chancellor, Prof Ahmed Warfa; and Mercy Corps Director of Programmes, Mathew Lucas.

Garissa University Geospatial Strategic Plan was also unveiled. The plan outlines the institution’s vision and objectives in the geospatial realm.

The Garissa University Geospatial Innovation Center is a world-class facility and one of its kind in the Country.

The GIS Week celebration at Garissa University signifies a monumental milestone in the university’s

journey into the geospatial field. The establishment of the Garissa University Geospatial Innovation Center will position the university as a hub for learning, research, and innovation in geospatial technology.

The inaugural GIS Week celebration at Garissa University is an opportunity to transform the region’s geospatial landscape and foster a brighter, more resilient future.

Garissa University is immensely gratefully to all partners in this endeavor, particularly, Mercy Corps, Esri East Africa, Garissa County Government, World Food Programme and Locate IT.

The partners, led by Mercy Corps, invested close to Ksh 50,000,000/ (Fifty Million) on tools, systems and licenses to set up the Garissa University Geospatial Innovation Center.
